Car: 1991 GTA & 1989 TA
Engine: 305 TPI & 305 TBI
Transmission: 700R4
engine problem
K I need a little help. I own a 1989 trans am 305. I cant get the engine to turn over. Car has new battery and starter. It is getting power to the starter and the ground cable on the battery is securely grounded. Also all the fuses on the car are good. If I cant fix it soon I may just send car to a pontiac dealership to have them fix it. Any ideas on where else to check. Any advise would be welcome. Thanks

The starter has a safety interlock to prevent cranking while the trans is in gear (automatic trans) or the clutch pedal isn't pushed in (manual trans).
Assuming you have an automatic, try moving the shifter to Neutral and re-test. There's usually some slop in the shifter, move it around (while still in N) while the key's turned to START and see if it doesn't try to crank.
