oil pump????
oil pump????
alright i put a 355 in my 88 iroc with a melling M55HV high volume high pressure oil pump and i keep blowing out the oil cooler seal. i was told that it was because of the pump and before i go through and change the pump out, id like to get more opinions. what do u think about it? itll run for a minute or so and then just start shootin the oil out from where the seal just blew
all help is appreciated thanks

I know I hav'nt had any problems like that, but I don't run an oil cooler either.
But I do know one thing...there's no way I'd go through changing out an oil pump because of a oil cooler seal that wants to leak. Ditch the cooler, or get a better one.

you shouldn't need a Hv pump. a m55 with the mr gasket #26 spring should be fine for almost every application. the HVHP pump could be the cause of your problems.

Joseph:
How much oil pressure is it indicating on the gauge? If the gauge is pegged, grab a cheap mechanical gauge and temporarily install it where your stock sending unit is. They're the same 1/8" NPT thread.
I suspect your new pump has a stuck pressure relief. If so, the pan's coming down and the pump's getting replaced, in which case Ed's suggestion of a standard volume pump is handy.
I like the Melling M-155 myself. Standard volume like the M-55, but with a bigger pickup tube diameter. The Mr Gasket spring, or the GM "white" spring, are a great upgrade in pressure as Ed indicated.

So let me restate my previous answer - If it's a high volume (Melling 55HV) and you did NOT use the higher tension spring that came with the pump to raise pressure, then that's the same one I've had on my engine for three years and I've had no problems.
I'm not going to debate whether you need a HV pump or not on the board. It's been beaten to death in other posts already.
