Please Help "85 Z 28"
Hi everyone.
This forum seems to be the BOMB!
Well down to the nitty critty.
I am presently in the middle of a 1985 Z-28 project and need a little inside info PLEASE.
This car presently has the original 2.8 six cylinder motor in it, and I have the fender's, door's, front grill, and ready to replace all these with brand new parts when I thought about the motor.
Can the transmission of the 2.8 on this 85 bolt right up to a 350?
What is neccessary changes needed to swap out the 2.8 with a 350 motor?
Please help any one with this because I'm at a place on this restoration where I can start painting or switch gears to an engine swap if it's only motor mounts etc.
Thx sincerely the new member on the block.

Well first off if it's an original 2.8 it's not a Z28 .... now that that is covered
no your V6 tranny won't bolt to a 350.
Also did you get a chance to read the sticky at the top of the page
if you got any questions after reading that, these guys will help out with anything cause it's been done and these guys rock.
PS - Im in the middle of a swap and these guys have been invaluable.

Humm so I ran the VIN and I'll be darned if it didn't come up with Z
(1G1FP87S0FL421082) BUUUUUUUUT Like you all said Z-28 did not come with a 2.8 and now that we have that out of the way the real issue is I would really like to put a 350 in this Camaro.
One of you said yes and the said no, and the last qoute commented about a sticky at the top of the page.
Please forgive for being new to this forum but I am unable to see the sticky you are referring to.
Can you please hook me up with the guys your talking about regarding the engine swaps.
thx a bunch

2.8 swap...
P.S......
What if this engine was installed after the fact and it's not the original motor??
How can find out which tranny it is??????
Turbo 350 are easy to tell as so are the turbo 400 and their very distinctive pan configurations.
So the question is how can I verify which tranny I may have? :lala: :lala: :lala: :lala:

There's no such thing as a 350 or a 400 that will bolt to a 60° 6-cyl; so you don't have to worry about that. It's not one of those.
If the trans is an automatic, it's a 700-R4. If it's a manual, it's a T-5. From the way you're talking I'm guessing it's the 700.
To put a V8 in that car, you need a V8 motor (duh), a V8 trans, all the accessories that go on the front of the motor, mounts, exhaust, and about a million little things that will bite you in the rear and make you take dozens of trips to the junkyard to get them all.
Might be hard to tell if that's the original motor or not. But at least it's the same type as it came with. The car's VIN says it came with the 6-cyl motor. Engine digit (8th) is "S".
If you can't see the "sticky" in question, you have serious problems, far beyond motor and trans identification. It's about the 7th or 8th post in this forum.

The VIN decoder says you have either a Sports Coupe or a Z28, not that you have a Z28. Said the same thing about my SC donor car.
Since you have a V6, you can be sure you don't have a Z28.
Other than that, everything RB's saying you can take to the bank.

yeah theres alot of folks here that have done that swap with few problems at all ...the main thing is do you want to keep fuel injection or go to carb thats a must know....and the factory 2.8 litre auto tranny (if thats what you have) isnt gonna work with a v8 its a different bolt pattern...

but if u can find a trany you can always make it fit
either drill new holes or get an adapter. if u go this route then your gonna need a new tranny sooner or later. sorry about confusing you. i thought that they would work but i guess not. you could also use a a tranny out of a truck.

I'm not sure i understand about the findign a tranny to fit and drilling new holes, but im pretty sure that to use the transmission from a truck you would have to swap the tailshafts, cause the truck doesnt have a torque arm mount on it.
