Power steering is done
hit it with a low grit sand paper or bead blast it if you have that option. then hit it with a high grit paper. i'd use some por15 to insure it doesn't come back. i wouldn't want to see you spend all that money on that swap just to have the chassy fall out from under you.
looks like your swap is going well other then the battey tray though. is that power steering res mounted to the radiator support or did you make a bracket for it? i haven't seen that spot used before, nice install man.

I love the way that cleans up the drivers side of the motor. Do you know if it is possible to convert the pully on that pump to a V belt system as to make my life any easier and what did you do for brackets for the pump

pasky can you give me some info on what you used for the power steering lines. i'v already had two different lines with connecters and they both blow off on me. thats what napa hooked me up with. can you tell me what you used and where to get it. i even called jegs today and they could not help me. i also bought i power steering line for an 96 impala which thirim had on a post that worked good for him but did not for me. any help thanks

dumb question....
Maybe this is the reason for all my problems....but, I thought the high pressure side was 18mmx1.5 O-Ring, but the PN listed is thr 16mmx1.5 O-Ring! In the pics you have the line going to the location of my 18mm hole. Russell says the 18mmx1.5 is not available yet. Was there something weird with 87 T/A's that they used 18mm for the high pressure?!
I hope someone has an answer soon
I don't want to drive the beast with a disconnected power steering line!
edit:
Forgot to mention, the fitting into the pump was also wrong. The box lists it as #6-3/4-18 however, upon measuring it, it was really a 11/16-18, however, my pump needed a 5/8-18. The difference btw 11/16 and 5/8 is 0.625, which is more than the thread depth of 0.055 so I checkit it up in the lathe centered to w/i 0.001 and cut off 0.062 and cut a 18 tpi thread into it to 0.055 +/- 0.001. Fits great!, but I am still confused as to whi it didnt fit in the first place, same with the gearbox, so here is what I know:
The engine is a 5.7L LT1 with aluminum heads, supposedly out of a 95 Camaro, but the harness is a 96 harness, the ig coil is a 95 though....
The car is a 1987 trans am, possibly a GTA since 87 was a fubar year for GTA's...One of these days I will get its original RPO code list from PHS...
It does have the short throw 2 1/4 turn lock to lock gearbox.
/ :edit
Thanks

The pressure side is the first number I listed, 11/16 Inverted Flare

Well Just to be 100% sure, I just took the thread guage and calipers to the old line. It measures 0.702 on the outside, and tried a 16 and 18 and 20 TPI thread guages, none fit. 0.702 is 17.83mm. That fitting is definatly 18 millimeters.....let me go take a picture of this thing, a picture always helps

Take pictures all you want, measure till your caliper wears out,
The high pressure side uses the 11/16-18 fitting jegs part number 799-648050
The LT1 pump uses the 16MMx1.5 O ring seal jegs part number 799-648060
And for reference the low pressure fitting on the steering box is also a 16MMx1.5 if you decided to try and plumb braided for the return or something....

Ok here it is...
Here is my gearbox up close and personal
1 is the 18mm hole I thought I had carefully makrked the first time as the high pressure line, it is the hole I have been using from the pump since I switched the LT1 into this thing. #2 is the 16mm hole. Both use fittings that look the same, just different sizes, which look just like the P/N 799-648060 on the O-Ring side. The old line where it went into the pump had only an inverted flare on it. Furthermore, the original lines had the same setup, which is why I matched it as such.
Now can someone shed some light on this thing?
Thanks again

Look, I'm not being nasty here, I am trying to figure out whats going on here. Clearly in the pic you can see that the 2 holes use different sizes.
11/16 did not fit my pump, I pulled the pump side fitting and tried various taps, measurements, etc, it is 5/8s on my pump. Are you using a vette LT1? There may be differences there!
Lastly, I'm not 100% sure my gearbox is original, I'm the 6th owner of the car, however, when I ordered the High Pressure line from O'Reillys it came with the 18mm fitting on it, but again, I ordered for a camaro engine, and a 1987 trans am

Russel has listed an 18mmx1.5 O-Ring seal on their site as part number 648080, but summit said they called russell and they said it is unavailable, so I'm gonna call them up real quick and verify, and see if they are available, but not in quantity, or if they are, worse case I'll just order some aluminum stock and cut my own...., but I hate using hex stock....and my mill hasn't showed up here yet, even if it had, I would be hard pressed to put a hex cut on it w/o an indexed rotating table
I'll post my findings....
Edit: ARG, none have been made yet.....no delivery date given! I'm going to do a quick google search and see what I can find, otherwise, I'll be doing a lot of measuring, and make my own....hopefully
I'm not a super skilled machineist, but then, this part doesnt seem too complicated either....just have to deal with hex stock (yuck, why, because you have basically 2 options, attempt to center it with a 4 jaw chuck, and dial indicator, which is difficult since you can't guarantee you are measuring the exact center of the stock, or just put it in a 3-jaw chuck and hope....now, this doesn't have to be perfectally round, but I'm a perfectionist!

Got one by earls, which is a division of Holley, like Russel was a division of edelbrock...
Part numbers are:
991956 for the 18mm into the high pressure side of the rack and pinion
991947 for the 5/8-18 into the pump.
For summit part numbers, just add EAR- to the number and it will come up. I didn't check to see if russell had a 5/8-18 adapter for the pump. Since Z28 is sure though that his pump was not 5/8-18, and I believe him, measure before ordering. My dad told me measure 3x, cut 1x. Well needless to say I forgot to measure, so now I got an extra 16mm fitting around. Curiously enough though, I decided to check 16mm....it works out to be .630 inches, 5/8's is .625....and the thread pitch is close to 18....I imagine with some fighting, you could make an aluminum 16mm x 1.5 fit into a 5/8-18 hole, and have it seal
So basically, you can look and see what earl has for steel braided line, or keep the jegs number listed, same goes for any 90º fittings you may want. Another one would help up at the pump since I mangled my plug wire loom not having a 90º fitting there...oh well, live and learn...

Ok, I got mine at a local hose shop long ago, since jegs only had 2 sizes and i knew the pressure one was bigger, I ASSumed the 11/16 was the correct one which matched what i used for the pressure size, since you said it was definetly similar to LT1 fitting but bigger i went and found the fitting that was in my car, I guess it is an 18MM like you stated, luckily the brand was stamped on the side of one of them, heres a link for you, they've got the 18MM O ring fitting
http://www.raceplumbing.com/product_...roducts_id=344
991956ERL
18mm x 1.50"
6
Power Steering - "O" Ring Seal
Quite odd since they carry earls and xrp and its an earls pn and mine was XRP.
And pasky, for some reason i think your line popping was due to assembly error on your part, not it being "crap"

The LT1 pump oulet and steering box low pressure port are DEFINETLY 16MM x 1.50 i've got 3 16 x 1.5s sitting here.

No, it was assembled correctly, that picture you see up there is me test fitting it. I set the host on correctly and the brass stop in the middle, it would work fine for a day and just would pop out of the blue. Not in my assembly area, but in the middle of the hose!

Well I was kinda scared there when you said it was blowing in the middle, but I think I'll chance it. I looked up pressures and found most power steering system should operate btw 1000 and 1750 psi, and the hose is rated for 2500, so if it blows, I'll send it back
Just gotta last long enough for the car to pass inspection, but I would prefer to have power steering since moving this beast by hand is already taking its toll on the car and me, although I have gotten a bit stronger
I ordered the part through summit, I want the part soon, and summit is only maybe 4-5 hours from where I am, I figure even on the slowest shipping, it will probably be here either friday or monday
I also ordered fast since there was a nasty t-storm approaching, and the PA power grid is not well shielded from lightning...I used to work at CompUSA in the tech shop, and after every thunderstorm we usually installed 4-5 power supplies, and a similar count of modems, so I ordered real quick and pulled the plug. It looks like that fitting is basically the same thing though, so I'm not worried.
Best of luck to everyone else doing this system, I'll post if my line blows out

Aeroquip makes the fittings too. Just replaced my high pressure line with Aeroquip blue hose, and some cool fittings. Can't post a pic til I get home though.

follow up...
A little additional info here, sorry for the long delay, the past 2 years the GTO has been nice to me
Anyways, I finially went to pressurize the power steering with the steel braided line. Everything went well, until I hit up against the steering lock.....pop...blew the end out. Perhaps I made it wrong, it was a while ago, maybe it was sitting for the past 2 years, I don't know, either way I was fed up with it, and just wanted a working solution, so I went with the hydraulic line from napa.
This was a bit of a pain though, so I figured I'd post the information for everyone else so should you too want this cable made, you can order it over the phone with part numbers in hand.
First off, you still need the adapters listed in the previous posts to get away from the power steering fittings, and over to the 6 AN fittings. However, they told me at napa there is no such thing as a standard an fitting, so we hunted around for connectors and found some matches.
2x item# G25170-0606 which are gates hydrolic host fittings
6x item# 86622 which is gates hydrolic hose
the hydrolic hose is sold by the foot, and 5' may be enough, but I made mine 6'. You may also want a 90 degree fitting on the rack and pinion, but I left it straight this time, and the extra hose more than makes the bend. These bolt right on to the listed adapters.
I posted this for anyone else who needs it, as well as myself just in case I ever need to do this again
Good luck with your projects
Mine is just starting back up.
