which 350?

which 350?

i have an 85 z28 with a 305 that i plan on getting rid of and replacing with a 350. my question is...which 350 should i get? does it need to be a L98, or can i put basically any 1st gen 350 in it? also, what all do i need? a new knock sensor?what else?will the 305 exhaust manifolds work? i know i will need a AFPR to use the stock injectors. do i need to reburn the PROM, or will it work well enough with the stoc PROM. im not building this car for a performance vehicle, i just want something reliable, and with a little more power the the old 305. i know these questions have probably been answered before, but it is hard to find straight answers. thanks you for any help that you can provide me.

Since you talk about fuel pressure regulator and injectors, I'll assume you have a 1985 Z28 with LB9 TPI 305. It would have been nice if you had actually said that, because most 1985 3rd gen 305's were not TPI.

The '85 TPI system was not very good. You'd be better off getting a later MAF system, or going with SD. You could inquire on the TPI forum for more specifics. For all I know, though, they may tell you your system will be fine.

Your 305 exhaust manifolds will bolt up. Headers would help it to perform better, but they will work.

If you get a complete L98, it will have what you need to do the job. But, you can put any '86-earlier Gen I SBC under the TPI you have now. The only other difference is '86-later had the one-piece rear main seal with requires a different flexplate. But, if you get an engine that has a 153-tooth flexplate already, that won't cause any problems.
