305 to 350 swap newbie please help me

hey guys i went out the other night and found a little sport compact get together and thought key word being thought i would show them who was boss. well needless to say they were all running mid to low 13s and my 305 auto just couldnt hang with any of them.

i did find another get together with a few third gen guys and they suggested swapping to a 350 with vortec heads and a 750 carb and i would be close if not faster than the ricers i lost to.

well i have 1,500 in the bank and im looking to get a 350 into the bay of my car.

my uncle has assembled many 350's so what i guess i am asking is where do i look for a 350 for around 200-300 max, whats a good rebuild kit, and what all would i need to swap from tpi to carb, and parts suggestions since i know nothing about engine building.

:hail: :hail:

they weren't at kilkare. i didnt say that anywhere in my post. but besides that i have heard of them running that at kilkare.

what i am asking is will 1,500 get a 350 into the mid or low 13s? the tranny and rear dont matter right now. i will deal with them later just need the engine to be able to reach low to mid 13s even if i only get low 14s due to bad rear end and weak tranny. get what i am saying?

You need to save some more, or talk your uncle into contributing to the cause.

Where not here to burst your bubble. 1500.00 would get you a stock 350 crate and maybe an intake. If you dont want to get smoked by those guys again, just save up your money and do it right the first time. untill then, stay away from the honda's!

And no street racing!:nono: Keep it safe and take it to the track! The only reason i say that is cause i've had a friend die while street racin. it's not worth it!

what are your thoughts on remanufactured engines from places like autozone or advance auto parts? just as something to start with and mod later. the 305 is pretty tired and begining to backfire a lot and im tired of putting money into that weak engine. any help would be appreciated.

The cheap autozone engines are just that, cheap. They have the crappy old 882 heads, or maybe some 993 hecho en mexico specials. It will have a cast crank, stock rods, and cast dished pistons. Not that the rods and crank will be a problem, but those pistons with those heads spell disaster. Also as a side note, usually the cams in these autozone, or pep boys, or whatever brand are incredibly crappy. Typically worse than an LO3 cam. And dont get suckered into buying one of thier "performance" engines either. THey are usually the same damned engine, just with a crappy "350hp/327" cam. I dont think I have ever seen an engine with this cam make that horsepower. In fact if you read the small print it will say that the motor wont even make the dismal 260hp, or whatever it is, without headers, and a certain intake, and a certain carb, etc. Its a damned joke. If you want a crate, spend the money and get it right. If you want something to build, buy a shortblock, and go from there.
