305 oilpan Q

Sorry,I didn't know where else to ask this.

Can the oilpan on an '89 Firebird 305 auto be replaced with the engine in the car?

Thanks.

You'll need to lift the motor up to get it to clear the k-member

It is not fun

Be sure to get one of those newer one piece metal reinforced rubber gaskets.

You effort is and time is not worth taking a chance on a cheapo cork gasket that will leak if you overtighten it.

Trust me I learned the hard way.

Yes it can be replaced, but the engine must be lifted about 6" to do it. I've done it before. Its not too bad though, actually. Just rent an engine hoist, hook it up, undo the motor mount bolts, and lift away. Might be a good idea to take out the distributor too, but prolly not necessary.

Thanks, guys. Thats' what I needed to know.

TBITrucker....where can I get this "one piece" gasket. I'm familiar with the same scenario with MOPAR 360's. They DO make all the difference in the world!

By the way, in case anyone is interested, this whole thing came around because my stepdaughter and her friend decided to turn her '89 Formula into a "Lowrider". Any guesses as to what happens to the underside of a third gen when you yank the springs out?

Trust me...it ain't pretty!

Yes..springs back in tomorrow, oilpan over the weekend and DEATH if she does anything like this to it again!!!!!!
