trans OT question

Well, this is close to the subject... I am looking at the GM Goodwrench site link via eBay that lists trans numbers that appear to be direct replacements...does this sound right, or am I interpreting it wrong:
For my 1988 Cadillac transaxle: originally 440T4 replace with 4T60

Also having my 89 Formula vert, the trans for Pontiacs list 83 to 93 range: 4L60
I was reading that new parts from GM have new numbers, but work to replace older ones, which is why I'm trying to get some techhead advice for a novice wrench turner like myself. I was also hoping to find if they suggest you can swap 4.5 liter engines from the Allante Caddy to the same year Devilles... as something to consider if I don't sell or trade the car.
Thanks
BILL

The 4t60 is a 440t4. All parts interchange. Same with the 4l60/700r4. GM changed to a standardized way to list transmissions:

4 = 4 forward speeds
L = long mount (rear wheel drive)
60 = the number used for the approximate amount of torque that the trans can hold up to.

4 = 4 forward speeds
T = transverse mount (front wheel drive)
60 = same as above

if there is an E after (4t60e, for example) then it is electronically controlled by the PCM for shifting instead of the tv cable on older transmissions.

Not sure about your caddy question except that you can run it in a 3rd gen with a 2.8/ 3.1 tranny............

If you convert it to transverse engine and front wheel drive...

same metric gm bolt pattern for 2.8 and 4.5 caddy. Then its rear wheel drive and custom motor mounts away.........

That's not rear wheel drive.

My OTHER car is a newly gotten Cad 1988 Deville. I need a new trans so for now, that info is helpful. I was told the Allante engine might work at a Cad board but might need rewiring regarding the trans. Since I've never heard of it being done, I'm of the mind no one has tried. It should give that normally 155HP engine something closer to 200hp, however the 200HP Allante had some computer advancements that seem to bear early resemblence to StabiliTrak.
I know you RWD diehards might object to the comfort and (dare I say boring???) ride of a Cad...but keeping it in the family is a good thing, I'm a sucker for luxury as well as the sporty fun of the F cars
