My 1988 GTA needs a new motor
Hello Friends,
I just bought a 1988 GTA. It needs a new TPI 350 engine. Ok, my question is this- what kind of engine will work? Does it have to be a 1988 L98 TPI shortblock engine? Is a Pontiac or a Chevy motor Ok? Please let me know.
I would re-use this motor that I have, but the dude ran it hard, and it threw a rod. The block is cracked. So, I need a new engine for it...

If the heads are still good I'd find a rebuild 350 roller short block and swap everything over. While you are at it you can have the heads refreshed.
If not, I'm sure there are many people out there who will give you some good advice.
You should be able to pick up a used L98 motor in decent condition for about $500 to $600

Porting good. I'm very happy I have ported heads. Makes a huge difference up top. I don't think the stock heads would allow me to pull upwards of 5,700rpm in 3rd gear doing 130mph+.
But the intake is quite happy up there. Still, I bet it would pull harder in 4th gear if I could go full throttle. But WOT in 3rd gear at 130mph about just as fast as 2/3rd throttle in 4th.
Need to fix that tranny, or just put a T56 in there so I can play on the highway

Pontiac stopped making engines in 81 I think ..
Dont quote me on that ..
How much do you have to spend, and what are your goals ?
If it were me, Id go find a vortec motor from a '98+ truck.
I got one a long time ago with 906 vortecs and ZZ4 cam stock !
Or rebuild what you have, get the block prepped, .30 over, KB pistons, balance the rotating assembly, XE 268 ,and top it off with worked over 441, 993,487x,492 or 624 heads.
ps- These casting # are from chevy heads that are worth rebuilding.

A vortech motor would be a good idea. But then he needs the SDPC vortec base, which is another $400.
Though its a good option and I would have considered it when I got my car.
