L69 or early 350?
hey guys, ur knowlegeable wisdom is need!
i have 2 engines that are a possible candidate to fill my engine bay. the first is an L69 305 from a camaro with these rare 5L engine heads. i forgot what the name of them are. my plans for that engine is to swap my TPI from my LB9 to the L69. my feeling this will be the easiest of the 2 choices.
the second choice is a 4 bolt 350 from the mid-late 70s that belongs to my best friend. more info to come later.
the challenge is this: whatever engine i get needs to be fuel injected. meaning whatever i get needs to be able to accept my TPI from my old engine. was there a difference between the TPI manifold on the 305 (LB9) and the 350 (L98)?

how's the swap process? difficult or do-able?
the 305 and 350 are exactly the same externally. just un bolt everything from the 305, pull it out, put its heads on the 350 and put it back together the way it was originally. Then you need to tune the ecm if your going to use the tpi, or at least get a 350 knock sensor, prom and timing unit (i dont remember what its called)

nsimmons => instead of reprogging my 305 ECM would a ECM from a 350 car do the trick?
five7kid => i don't think my bestfriend's dad would try and sucker me, but for the sake of arguement, are you saying there's no such thing as rare 305 heads?

Somebody's being suckered.
3rd gens got the "best" 305 heads the factory made, and they were on the HO L69 as well as the lo-po LG4. Starting in 1988, the factory started putting really poor "swirl port" heads on the base 305, the LO3, but the LB9 TPI engines still got good 305 heads.
If they're stock L69 heads, they're the same as every L69 got, as well as '82-'86 LG4 engines. Starting in '87 they used heads with a different angle for the center two intake manifold mount bolts on each side, and center-bolt valve covers, but those heads are every bit as good as L69 heads.
As long as you stay away from LO3 swirl port heads, any 3rd gen 305 head is as good as the next.

you dont need the ecm from a 350 just get a chip from a l98 vette or fbody or order one for that application. Whats the tpi setup from? If its already from an L98 your done.
[edit]
duh, and 350 injectors also.

five7kid => thanks for the background history about these heads. i will inquire about their name/coding and get back to you.
nsimmons => if allowable, i would like to use the TPI set up (and now probably the heads too) from my LB9 305. besides swapping the chip (eprom, right?) from a L98 car, would i have to modify/change anything else?

I'm going to do the same swap (69 350 in place of my 88 LB9) so keep us posted as I will do the same!!
From what I've found, you can run the entire same setup on the 350 (injectors, EPROM, etc.) but it won't be as good as it can be. That's the route I'm going till I can spend the extra $$$!

i will also be doing the same thing early spring so keep us updated on how everything turns out
pretty sure this is all that you need to pull off the swap
1. 350 ecm/prom
2. 350 knock senser
3. 22# injectors
this one isnt really needed but if your swaping from a 305 to a 350 its a good choice
4. 305 heads for higher compression ratio
also anybody know where i can buy a 350 ecm.prom and knock sensor?

the rare 416 casting came on everything with a 305 in the early to mid 80s. f-bodys, caprices anythign with a 305. even on boat motors they used them, had a pair on my 85 celebrity. does this guy also want to sell you a bridge?

Swirlports came on the LO3, never the LG4.
416's are the "good" 305 castings, but they are far from "rare". The LG4's "problems" were not in its heads.
The only thing I didn't say in my previous post were that the heads of which I spoke were 416's (081's for '87-up)
