depends on year and what is in your car now. i have the 3.1 with the 700r4, and this much i can tell you, that the tranny uses the BOP (buick olds pontiac) bolt pattern. the trans is useless to me.
the main diffrence is the top 2 bolts on the bell housing. they do make an adapter plate to help bolt up but if you have a chevy tranny, i would just use that. you might even get a 700r4 pretty good and not have to change the drive shaft lenth. i happen to be going with a th400 setup, so i have torque arm adapters and diffrent cross members. to avoid all that, just get you a chev th700r4 out of a camaro.

the thirdgen 60* v6 bolt pattern ( and 4th gen V6 3.4 & 3.8 ) are not BOP patterns. The 3.8 from the Buick t-types is a BOP pattern.

Can we assume that the TH700 of which you speak is an '88 V8 3rd gen? If so, it will "bolt up" to all small block Chevy engines (and big blocks, for that matter).
Getting a starter to mount - now, that can be a different issue. A '72 engine, though, no problem.
There are some issues with regard to the flexplate, but getting an '83-'85 3rd gen V8 flexplate will solve that issue.
No "adapter plate" is required, however.

The 700R4 will bolt up to almost any chevy motor starting with 4.3L. The 3.1, 2.8 needs the V6 case for the tranny, the V6 tranny WILL bolt to a V8 block with an adapter, but no the BOPC adapter. The "Buick Olds Pontiac Chrys" adapter is for those motors specifically. Thats why its a BOPC adapter, not a SBC adapter. The flex plate depends on the starter type and the motor size, there are plenty of charts available online.
BTO can tell you what size flexplate (760) 947-5240

It's probably a 168-tooth flexplate. It will probably be fine if you use the starter from the '72. Sometimes people have header clearance issues, because the larger flexplate puts the starter out farther from the engine center.Originally posted by Tweaked
