86 Trans Am 305 Swap Out
Hi all, this is my first post here and reading though all of this is fantastic and this site is a godsend 8)
Ok, first question:
I have the stock LG4 in my Trans AM. The wife came home one day and there was this horrible rattle coming from what appears to be the rear of the engine. I had just changed the rocker covers to a set of edilbrocks as the old ones lost their seal. I took off the rocker covers thinking the oil shield had come loose and was bouncing around inside but it was still there, and no scoring was found on the inside of the covers. It would do it in park, drive, reverse without change in frequency, but would speed up if the gas was pressed. Any ideas? This one sounds scary...
Second:
If indeed something is fubar, I was planning on swapping out the 305 computer controlled carbed engine with any form of fuel injected. My question is, is there any particular set up that is easiest? Wouldn't mind going to a 350 but would settle for the easiest swap, this would be my first if I attempted it. I'm not mechanic trained, and do this as a hobby. I've muddled around under there with a new intake manifold and mods to my Jeep.
Third:
I'm in Ontario, Canada. I hear there are rules for swapping out engines, and them having to have either the same pollution controls or swapping in a newer engine. Anyone know if this is true? And, anyone in Ontario that could recommend a yard that I might scope out engine/tranny combo's that might be suggested by the readers here?
Thanks guys, great site and appreciate any suggestions 8)

Welcome aboard.
I found this Board after I had bought the donor and receptor cars and had it running. I made plenty of mistakes that could have been avoided had I known about this Board first. But, anyway...
I assume there wasn't any noise when you finished switching the covers. And, you checked both covers. Have you started the engine with the covers off?
The noise my car made from the back of the engine was the torque converter. But, it could be loose torque converter bolts, loose engine mount bolts, or some internal engine consequences of your wife "proving" her car is faster than those pesky Accords...
As far as swapping out the engine and controls, I'd stick with the computer controlled carb (no, wait - that is what I'm doing!). Either TBI or TPI would be of about the same complexity, but either should be legal (I'm fairly sure the rules in Canada are the same as they are in the US - same year as chassis or newer, same type of vehicle, all equipment, eh?).

Thanks for the reply, just having the one reply I'm going to assume there is no "easiest" swap.
Thanks for the help

Reason for only one reply was nothing else needed to be said...
Actually, the easiest way to do the swap would be if you had a complete donor car from which you could take everything needed for EFI. I'd probably go TPI if I had a choice.

Sounds pretty ordinary actually.
If I was the betting kind, I'd bet the noise is a cracked flex plate. Happens all the time.
I'd look into that before worrying about a motor swap.
