timing problem. help!
ok so i put in a 327 at idle the timing has to be at least 36* advance for it to start do you think it is a cam to crank or a distributor issue or something else?

Id should be around 10-14 degrees intial, TOTAL timing should be 36ish depending on your combo at about 2000-3000 RPM depending on your ignition curve.

I think you've got a problem with your damper timing mark and timing tab not properly lining up at TDC.

The dots will line up on one rotation of the crank and then the cam will be 180 degrees off on the next crank rotation.
You can't get the cam 180 degrees off.
You need to check the location of the timing mark on the damper when the #1 piston is at top dead center.
Did you replace or mix either the damper of front cover?

The timing marks aren't identical in all SBC years, it's best to get a timing tab and balancer as a matched set to avoid mismatches.
