A "Crate Engine" is a motor which you purchase that is ready to install, meaning pre-assembled and test ran. They usually come in a huge wooden crate.

Pre-assembled, yes, but test ran is not implied.

It came into vogue as more engines were being offered already built up, and delivered in a "crate". That's really all you can assume. You can't assume a "crate engine" will be complete, properly assembled, new, used, rebuilt, etc. You have to know what they're providing, not that they call it a "crate engine".

In other words, "buyer beware".

Buying a new "crate engine" from the dealer (GM) is fairly safe, though. Still, they come in different degrees of completeness.

COMPLETE (that's the disclaimer) GM crate motors come pre-thrashed, according to their ads in HOT ROD.

Yes, the 572's.

However, they aren't talking about a Goodwrench 350, which is also a "crate" engine.
