engine start = flames

Well just started the Vortec 357 today. I set the engine tdc and the distributor rotor pointed on spark #1. Engine turned then flames came out the tbi. Looking for some input on what might be the cause. Here is the thread for the vortec tbi build

Sure it was TDC compression? try pulling the dist and turning it 180° i bet you were on exhaust stroke TDC when ya cold timed it.

Thanks for the response. It was set at tdc, I had the damper on 0 and even pulled the #1 spark plug to make sure the piston was up. I set the valve lash 1cylinder at a time. I rotated the engine and when the exhaust on that cylinder starts to rise, stop and set the intake, 0 lash then ½ turn. Rotate engine again until the intake starts to rise, stop and set the exhaust, 0 lash then ½ turn. It would be a pain in the **s to remove the passenger side valve cover with the hoses and accessories in the way. Timing is possibly 180° out so I will check that out tomorrow. Again thanks for the response, it’s always good to get second, third…etc opinion.

OK its a four stroke engine. There are four strokes, at time times in a complete cycle the engine is at TDC twice. Onc eon the compression stroke, once on the exhaust stroke. Well ya cold time it it make sure its on TDC AND compression stroke.

Got the car running but it would only run for about 10 seconds then quit unless I give it some throttle. I started the engine about 5 times letting it run and die on its own. Checked #1 spark plug and it was black. The pressure gauge read 14 so turn bolt counter clockwise and started the engine and the pressure gauge still read 14 and the engine stop running after about 10 seconds. I disconnected the IAC and still had no affect on the engine. The # on the injectors is 5235231 so I am guessing they are the 90pph. Should I try using the 305 injectors and bump up the pressure or try with a350 injectors?
