question about a 350

i have a 350 block with 4 bolt mains thats from the 70's. can i put on 87 and newer heads on it? the reason why i ask is because, i already have a tpi system from a 89. and i dont feel to comfy about drilling into the intake to make it fit on older heads. if i am wrong about this someone tell me. thanks.

The block doesn't care what heads go on it (as long as they're SBC 1st gen type).

You'll have flat-tappet rather than roller tappet cam & lifters; 2-piece rather than 1-piece rear main seal, requiring a different flywheel; and driver's side dipstick, which doesn't get along very well with stock exhaust manifolds. Other than that, no issues using an older block.

im not gonna use stock exhaust manifolds. is flat tappet good for making horsepower? i thought roller was.
