The Cruise Control Will Function With Motor Swap and Deleted Computer

Recently, after much searching on TGO, I concluded that there was no definitive answer to whether the cruise control would function or not if the computer were jerked in a swap. Long story short, at least on my 85 Camaro--and probably all thirdgens with the VSS buffer box on the rear of the cluster--the cruise will work. Quite simply, when the computer is removed, the ground that the computer provided for the VSS is lost. Reground the VSS and the cruise will function as designed. Note the pic: The black/white wire issues from the IP harness under the pass side (my plug won't look like yours as many of the wires were eliminated--just locate the black/white wire).

This plug and its black wire go to the cruise control module, again under the pass side. Join the black/white wire from the IP harness to the black wire from the cruise control module with a length of wire and enjoy. I used a couple feet of 14 gauge, stripped, soldered, and taped. By the way, I chose this method for what I saw as convenience, but the black/white wire could be tied into and grounded elsewhere.

So I'm trying to get my cruise control to work and came across this thread. I can't find those plugs? My Camaro is a 86 so I don't know if they changed plug design but the plugs I found are completely different. One of the plugs has a black wire with a white stripe but the other plug doesn't have a black just a dark brown

I'd be surprised if the plugs were different, but, of course, anything is possible. Perhaps, you'll find something in the following link:

I don't care how old the thread is. James is on this thread and that's who I was asking.

I found it James I appreciate it.

One question the plug that has the black wire with a white stripe does it need to be plugged in for that wire to be grounded?

The way I did it, IIRC, was grounding the black/white wire through the cruise control module and its ground. At any rate the black/white wire requires a ground.

EDIT: With the computer gone, the black/white wire isn't grounded, thus the need to reground.

This is actually might be very relevent to me if I do my 400 swap and go with the DFI controller. Won't need my ECM anymore with it and not sure if I can leave it connected or not.

So you can completely remove the ecm with no problem? I have a 91 and it's already swapped and carbed. The computer is just basically sitting their and I wanna clean up the engine bay and wires.

Re: The Cruise Control Will Function With Motor Swap and Deleted Computer

You would need to install a vss buffer in place of the ecm for cruise control function.
If you have a automatic 700r4 you would need a lockup kit.
