removing engire - wiring question
I started taking the engine ('88 L03 TBI) out of my car today and have a question... There's a bunch of wires running up the left side of the engine (by the valve cover), they then branch off to the various sensors (CTS, O2, etc). My question is: Does this bundle of wires all plug into one harness on the firewall? I can't see behind there and I don't want to lift the motor until I have some idea of what I'm going to run into. Thanks for any help.

Casey_Butt,
There are several different strands of wires in the engine compartment. The wires in the area you describe are coming from two different places. Some are coming from the ECM and some are coming from the Driver's firewall area.
Wiring Stands
#1 - ECM/Computer Strand - Comes from Passenger Side Fender Well and includes TBI wiring, Emissions, O2 Sensor, Trans, etc. (everything the computer needs) Runs to the Pass Valve cover around the back of the engine and toward the Driver's Side Firewall.
#2 - Power Strand - Comes from Driver's Firewall (bigger one) runs behind the Brake Master and around the back of the engine, down the Pass. Side valve cover, behind the Alternator and down around to the Starter. (Wipers, Dizzy, Alternator, Starter, etc.)
#3 - Lighting Stand - From Driver's Firewall (smaller one) runs down to the frame rail and forward to the front of the car. (Headlamps, Turns, etc.)
#4 - A/C Fan - Small strand that runs around the A/C fan area and into the firewall behind the Pass. Valve Cover. It's almost independant and can be left alone for a swap. It has one or two connections to #2 above.
#5 - Cruise Strand - Very Small just a handful of wires that come out of the firewall behind the Brake Master and run down the frame rail to the cruise control.
It's really not too complicated. You should really only have to disconect the wires from #1 & #2 above. You should be able to disconnect them and lay them aside without removing them from the vehicle.
Advice - Label Everything!. I use paper tags with strings (Office Depot) and write the color of the wires & plug color and the location. If the tag were to fall off I could probably still figure out where it came from.
Hope that helps,
Kurt
