Need engine advice
I am going to look at an 87Z28 tomorrow and from what the guy has told me about it, it sounds like a decent car. The car is a 305TPI with a 700R4.
The 305 is tired and needs to be replaced. Here is my delima.
I have a pre-87 0.030 350
forged steel crank
forged pistons (10.6:1 with a 76cc head, 12.5:1 with a 64cc head)
steel rods, all ARP studs, etc.
hydraulic cam 286H
moroso pan
pre-87 world torquer heads (2.02/1.6, 170cc, 76cc chambers, mild port work)
many other new parts....basically a fresh engine and reliable.
Now I need the opinion of you fellow techs.
1. Sell the world heads and put on a set of 87-up heads on it and keep the tpi
or
2. remove the tpi and go to a 650 street avenger carb. Not sure how easy it is to swap over...
I have never had a tpi car and curious of the power potential, driveability factor, and decent gas mileage. I am afraid of confusing the computer and all of the electronics, etc.
Also it may be hard to find an 87-up head with a large chamber...I dont think the computer would like 12.5:1's.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!
Mike

The computer really wouldn't like the cam, more than anything else.
You can get an '86-earlier TPI base for the earlier heads. Getting a later base on earlier heads isn't that hard, either - just modify the bolt hole angles in the base.
If you want to keep that cam, carb is probably your only real choice, unless you go with a wazoo induction system and PROM tuning. I would not, however go with an SA - not a performance carb.

Well I just found out its a base Z with the LG4 in it...which means its already carbed....that is what I was hoping.
I think I am going to sell that cam and tone it down some... at 10.6:1, it should run real good on 93. as long as I have the timing and tune down pat.
thanks for the help five7kid!
