Advice on Crate 383 powerplant

Ok, I have a 1983 305 crossfire automatic that I want to replace with a 383 crate engine. I have completed the restoration of the car and all that is left is the engine and paint. I have narrowed my search to a couple of companies. Golden engine service out of Hudson, NH and The Engine factory out of LEBANON N.J. Has anyone had dealings with either of these builders?

Here is a couple of links to what I am looking at...

http://www.enginefactory.com/stroker.htm

http://www.golenengineservice.com/ht...carbureted.htm

I want a turn key as I do not have the time/patience/know how to rebuild. I have previous experience pulling/installing engines but never on an f-body. Will most of the accessories bolt right up? Is it something I would want to attempt myself? Also, what about the cars stock tranny and rear end. If I go with a 400-450 hp engine how will they hold up. The current 305 is slower than my wife's van. Any idea what 0-60 times I can expect with 400hp? What unexpected suprises can I expect switching motors? Can I keep my stock hood? Is turn key the way to go? Is 6K a fair price for a 450hp turnkey 383?

I haven't dealt with them. You might get better response to that question on the regional forum.

Just looking quickly at what they are offering, the first place sure is cheaping out on the cam. It might make the peak numbers, but the torque curve would be greatly enhanced with a more modern grind from Comp, Crane, Lunati, most any major cam grinder. I wouldn't go with an Edelbrock carb, but that's my personal bias.

The 2nd one seems realistic. Note they don't recommend the higher HP packages for the street. Good advice.

Assuming they are using quality parts - and the 2nd place names names - and assuming they do a decent job of the assembly, there shouldn't be any reliability issues.

0-60 with 400-450 HP is a traction question, more than anything else. Quick will be the operative word when there is traction.

Does anyone have suggestions for a crate dealer that fits the description in my first post?

This is a way better bet and it is turnkey and exactly what you are looking for. A little more than you would spend but it is complete in terms on it is already programmed. Email them for details.
