Go for the 290 horse crate engine from GM if you get the baseline-type 350.
You're proposing pretty much what I did myself this past summer, except I didn't buy a new engine. The problem I have with these new crate engines that are available is they all have either poor heads, or heads that aren't compatible with your current induction system (speaking of the 350 HO in particular).
Now, if you go to their rebuilt button, you'll see an '88 350 for $1395 +$195 core. That would be an engine worth considering, with the only "issues" to get past being a slight modification to your intake manifold to get the center two mount bolts on each side to fit (or get an aftermarket q-jet manifold for '87-up), and needing a new $35 one-piece rear main seal type flexplate. These guys http://www.rebuilt-auto-engines.com/...28105415126.b9 or http://www.rebuilt-auto-engines.com/...28105415126.b9 have basically the same thing.
