Swap- Car starts, runs for 10s, then dies???
Hey guys,
I am trying to finish my V6 to V8 engine swap, but now this minor obstacle. I have a Qjet on a 350. The engine fires up just great, but dies after 10 sec...???.....---every time!
I dont think this could be the timing b/c it starts right up.??
There is fuel going to the carb b/c I can hear it squirting as I try to keep it going. Maybe the idle could be off.....so I will check that on WED.
Could a wrongly wired alternator cause this problem?
Any ideas????
Thanks,
Franchise

Sounds like a fuel issue. Try cranking the engine and get a small cup of gas or squirt bottle (small amount) and when it gets ready to die pour a little down the throttle and see if it picks back up. If it does then your either have a bad pump, filter or carb in need of adjusting (float) or rebuilding.
Obviously, use caution and this is just my 2¢

i did this swap, i had to change the gas tank, because of the fuel pump, etc being in the tank, had to change it to a gas tank from a carbureted firebird.
v6 fuel injected -> v8 350 carburetor
my vehicle would run for about 15-20 seconds, then shut off, then i would have to let it sit or pump it alot for it to turn on, then i could make get it to run for another 15-20 seconds it would shut off.
changed tanks, never had the problem again.

did you install a oil pressure switch above the oil filter, its what gives the car fuel when its tripped.
bad ride,
the pump worked fine that day, I pulled the fuel filter b/c it was too limiting. As for the carb...that could need a rebuild....so far that seems to be the only weak link.......
roughskin,
I did swap out the tanks...so it does have a carb pickup and tank.
7 plagues,
What is a oil pressure switch???? never heard of this.
I did hook up the stock pressure sender and it works just fine.
Even so, I dont think it would have an affect b/c it does not run off of a computer anymore, with the fuel pump flowing through. So how could this shut down fuel supply with no computer???
Any more info on this pressure switch would be greatly appreciated!!!
THnaks a ton guys,

Open to any other ideas.....anyone ever have a prob with a Qjet?

I had trouble with this on my old sportcoupe. Is the fuel pump electric or mechanical?
if electric, then what happens is the fuel pump will only prime and not run because the oil pressure switch says theres no oil pressure ( if you didnt hook it up).
is the distributer HEI?
other than that throw on a different carb and see if thats the problem.

Hey guys,
Checked it out yesterday....and you know how you can sometimes forget what you did...especially when you go back to it like a year later...well.....I am guilty of that.....I totally forgot that the idle screw was way too low.....I forgot I switched them and left it bad low. Now about a year later, working on it.....
So I caused my own problem, hasn't been the first time i did this.......
thanks for all the posts.
