The question is, "Why?" It will be a lot of hassle, you won't find donor parts that will work (meaning, fabrication), it won't have as much power as most any other swap regularly done, and it will cost more even using (what I assume is) this "free" engine.
You'd get more power out of a 3.4l V6, which is much closer to a bolt-in. 1978 was not the height of Buick 3.8 power by any stretch.

Mine as well get a new 3.8l if you wanna do it and just get all the stuff from a fourth gen if you want better 6'er

been there, done that (3800 Series II swao). I highly recommend starting out w.a vss cluster (saves the hassle of rewiring more than you need to. New motor mounts fabbed up, I reused the 2.8 frame placement, and it just pops right in. IT looks so damn clean in there it's amazing. I had issues that a tuner would've fixed, but not the $$ to get one (hptuners/digital horsepower) so now I have a 305 in it now (about as powerful as the L36) and weighs more
