LS1 wiring into early third gen
HI:
Maybe this has been covered, but I'm still new to this site. (If it has, please forward me the links)
I've just purchased my LS1/ 6 speed for my 1984 Trans Am and plan to install it within the next few weeks. My concern is about the wiring and hooking it up to the 1984 T/A wiring.
so you know- it's a 2002 LS1, and it's complete. I have the computer, the engine harness, the gas tank and the wiring from that. My plan is to make this emmisions legal, too (so I have all the sensors and smog pump, cats, etc). so I need to retain all the 02 sensors, etc...
I know I'll need to change my gauges over to electronic (was thinking autometer or something alike)
My questions are this:
1- how do I splice this into my current ignition and electrical system? (I see there is a large red wire that is to go to get 12v power when the key is "on") Aside from obvious grounds and battery terminals- what else needs to be installed and where?
2- where do I wire the fuel pump into? Is there a wire from the computer itself that sends power to the fuel pump (so the pump will turn on/ off, etc)
I'm concerned if I wire the fuel pump directly to a 12v "on" position- it won't shut off after the fuel line is pressurized if I don't start the engine... should I install a fuse on this? what amperage?
3- as for installing the gauges in my car- there's a large pc board behind the gauges. obviously, the factory gauges and cluster work from this. I want to cleanly install the gauges inside my IP so is there any tricks on this? Do I need to remove the entire PC board and get all new gauges? Is there a way to cut and trim this back to install the speedo and tach, while still retaining the factory temp and fuel gauges, etc? (typically cutting PC boards destroys them)
Do I just send the wiring harness to speartech (or someone else) and tell them everyhitng listed above so they can modify the harness accordingly?
any and all help would be appreciated!
Thanks,
-BV

You need a shop manual for the year of the engine and the year of your car. This wil be your bible for the swap.
