Flywheel crankshaft question..

My flywheel has 7 holes but only uses 6 bolts .
My question is why is there that extra hole?

I noticed the crankshaft also has that extra hole.
I also took notice that some of the crankshafts have a pin in
that hole, the crank on my car doesnt have that.

Is it for balance or is it just to hang the flywheel for bolting it up?

IIRC--and I mean, IIRC, the hole is for a dowel pin, some cars have it and some don't (my 85 didn't), but regardless, you should line the holes up.

So its just to make it easier to hang the flywheel when bolting.
thanks

May have something to do with balance.

The holes on the crankshaft? Aren't those oil passages?

I meant the flange if you can call it that where the flywheel bolts
up to the crank..

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Way back in the Civil War days, some carnks had a dowel pin.

Most didn't, and almost none at all do any more.

I suspect it had something to do with the machinery used at the factory to automatically assemble the motor.

Just use the hole as your assembly indicator, and don't worry about whether it has the pin or not.
