carb 2 efi... Fuel Tank Question

Howdy...

I have an 82 Trans Am that was an LG4 carb'ed car.

I want to swap to the Ram Jet 350 Crate Engine.

Knowing that there is no electric pump in the tank now, is the tank/float assembly the same as it was in the FI (crossfire) versions...?

Can I drop the tank and add a fuel pump to the current float assembly or do I have to try and get a new float..?

ANy thanks is appreciated greatly....

Not sure about the cross fire however you can tank a tank from any TBI powered car or TPI car and swap in a high pressure pump you need. I believe you need to replace the tanks, however I am not 100% on this since on the conversions I have done have been with TBI and TPI cars. Gas tanks are cheap at the junkyards, you could get one here for 50.00. Hope this helps.

Well, I'll take a WAG from my understanding:

The pick-up assemblies will swap between any 3rd gen tanks. However, some EFI tanks (and I believe that would apply to the later models) had different baffling inside the tank.

Per the GM web material, "Please note the fuel pump recommendations in the Ram Jet instruction manual." I haven't seen the Ram Jet instruction manual, so I don't know what their recommended pump actually is. Since the Ram Jet engine is intended for installation in pre-76 non-emissions vehicles, I seriously doubt it's a baffled, in-tank electric pump. From what I recall, an in-line electric back by the tank will do just fine. The regulator is part of the Ram Jet system.

thanks!

If I can get by with running an external pump assembly so be it.... lol

Only thing, I had an 84 that the previous owner had placed an external pump on, it was noisy as hell and you could hear it really well inside the car...

Are the newer outside pumps quieter..?

I suppose that would depend upon what type you used. I haven't had a non-factory electric pump on any of my cars since 1977, and that one was loud. However, I haven't heard complaints from people on this Board.
