computer harness

my dad and i going to be pulling a 305 tbi out of a 91rs to install into my v6 91rs. my question is why can't i unhook all the wiring from the computer and and leave the wires hooked to the sensors?seems to me this will aid in remembering where everything goes when in the v6 car. i'm planning on using the same computer out of the donor car so all the hookups ill be the same right?

First, take pictures of the overall engine bay of both cars, with detail photos where things are (firewall, particularly).

Next, disconnect the computer harness from the passenger kick-panel pass-through connector. Pull it into the engine bay. Disconnect all of the parts from the car that the harness connects to that aren't on the engine, and set them with the engine. Be sure to label what you disconnect so you know where it goes when you get back to putting it in the new car.

You could do the same thing and disconnect it all from the engine, and pull the harness/sensors out separately from the engine. That's basically what I did 7 years ago.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
You haven't been to an assembly plant, have you???

Reason I ask is, THATS EXACTLY HOW THE CAR WAS PUT TOGETHER IN THE FIRST PLACE. When the motor was put in the car, there wasn't some guy fishing wires through hoses and brackets and whatever else as the car rolled down the line; instead, all of that was already hooked up to the motor at the motor plant, and they just uncoiled the main harness to the ECM, ran it into the pass compartment, and plugged it in.

So yes, you absolutely CAN do it that way; and it might be a whole lot less work in the long run. In fact, that's exactly how I would do it, if I was doing what you're doing.

i just hate fishing around trying to figure out where a vacuum line or power wire goes and figure heck, it all combines into close to 1 or even 2 hookups, why not try and do it this way. you know the looms are usually bent and turned in the direction they need to go. hopefully this will work! i can't start the project until "next friday" (puff puff) lol so i'll keep ya'll informed.
