Do you have solid or rubber motor mounts...Solid its really really hard to put the trans in under the car with them....if there rubber you can drop the motor in with the trans....just be carefully i know that i did that and i didn't have enough room between the bumper and the cherry picker and the cherry picker took some of my paint off the bumper
... you can also put the trans in under the car too....you just need a jack or someone under the car to help move the trans into the right place...no matter what you do its a two man thing...either way its half dozen to one, 6 to 12, it takes the same amount of time and work either way

Well I pulled the engine and wasn't planning on pulling the trans...... but then I decided to clean it up and install a corvette servo so I ended up pulling it. I have a cherry picker and was planning on getting a load leveler and installing them together.... As far as paint goes the car needs lots of work in the paint department and so thats not a great concern for me at this time....

Won't you have a hard time installing the corvette servo with the tranny out of the car? In the car you pry against the tunnel to push in the cover and remove it - out of the car you have nothing to pry against.

I installed my Vortec 350 with tranny and engine and tranny together. Leveler does come in handy. Just make sure your cherry picker can handle the load. You may have to add some weight to the base of the cherry picker to prevent it from tipping forward. I installed the Corvette servo with the tranny out as well as replace the front and rear seal on the tranny. I put a 350/TH350 combo in a few years ago into an 86 Z-28 using a standard cherry picker at max length and it took me about two extra hours because the nose of the car was in the way. I eventually called for some help and got 2 people to push the motor back by hand and getting someone else to lower it over the mounts. (I did not have a leveler)
I am now faced with the same problem as you. I am ready to put my big block in. I know I really hate trying to lock and line up the stall converter while lying on back so I think this time around; I may pull the front nose off first. How complicated that is??? I don't know. I want to get detailed cleaning and painting in my engine bay anyway.
Best of luck to you, Scott
