Sensors?

chevycamaro91,

I'm not familiar with your project. Maybe you've got another post(s) where some of the TGO Guys are more familiar with this. I just noticed that nobody had offered anything and it had been a couple days......... So I'll TRY to help...

What "SENSORS" are you talking about? Your Water Temp, Oil Pressure, Tachometer should work......There are multiple other PROBLEMS you'll have to overcome with eliminating the ECM on a '91.

What's your plan? I hope you don't have emissions in you area of PA yet! Please provide more info.

Kurt

chevycamaro91,

Yes.... SORTOF.... We did a similar thing BUT we opted for completely computer controlled. We used a Rochester E4ME and replaced the ENTIRE wiring harness & ECM/computer with one from an '86 Carb'ed Z-28. The reasons for our choice are numerous, and I think we made a good choice and avoided many of the pitfalls others have had to overcome.

NOW TO YOUR CAR!!
I'm sure there will be folks that will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you have several additional problems to resolve with your '91 than we had with the '82.

From what I've gathered over the last year or two....

The Temp, Bat, Oil & Tach should work just fine. Speedo is probably another story..... I don't think you have a Speedo "Cable" as your speedo is somehow electronic via the ECM? (Not too sure but I read something about this a while back). If your ECM is disabled (or just not functioning properly) I don't believe it will properly "Lock-Up" the Tranny. Timing advance which is generated by the ECM with inputs from the Knock-Sensor and Emission Sensors will also not function properly. I assume you've overcome the electric fuel pump problems and the car is running since your worried about the gauges?

I guess I haven't been much help at all..... we really need someone to chime in that has more familiarity than I have with the newer thirdgens.

Sorry I couldn't provide real assistance....

Assuming you removed the ECM altogether....

Everything will work fine, except tach. You'll have the cut off the plug into the computer controlled distributor, seperate the wires, crimp on ends, and plug them into your new non-cc HEI distributor - one for BATT, and one for TACH (you did swap in anon-computer controlled HEI distributor right?)

All else works fine, including speedo.

Like mentioned, you'll also need to install a torque converter lockup switch kit if it's an auto tranny, as the ECM won't be there, and can't control the torque converter. This requires dropping the pan (good time for that shift kit install & new filter while there), and swapping the 4th gear solenoid, installing the included wire harness, and installing the included vacuum-controlled switch to lock the converter. Everything will be in the kit - they go for about $80 - $200 depending, B&M, TCI, and several other make them - available at Summit.

[hijiacks thread, sort of] if keeping the ecm plugged in, but going old school carb & dizzy, will the lock up switch from the tech article work, or will the aftermarket lockup switch still be needed?

linky: https://www.thirdgen.org/torqueswitch

thanks

edit: n/m, will just buy a kit & let engien vacuum do it's thing. will leave up just incasae someone else asks the question.
