need help with cam for 355
ok im doing the ever popular 350 carb swap on my 91 305tbi firebird i need some help picking a cam that will be good while the engine is close to stock and will do better when i start modding it. i know i should just get everything done befor the engine goes in but i ran out of cash and my engine is dieing fast. right now im gonna be running a 650cfm performer carb on a stock manafold with stock 350 tbi heads flat top pistons should have around 9.5:1 compression. its got a set of headman headers . later on im gonna put a vortec setup on it and rebuild the tranny with a 2800stall verter and some 3.42 gears what do you guys think would be a good cam for it. oh yea the cam needs to be hydraulic flat tappet its not a roller.

I think a Comp XE268 would be a nice choice, but not with those heads.

if you plan on swapping heads later and are going to tear down the motor that far I say use a stock cam or one you can find mega cheap for now then mod it later and add the cam that fits accordingly... just my .02

"Stock cam" is an undefined term. There are too many out there. Most "stock" factory cams would make a stump puller out of a 383, but that's about all you can say.

I agree with chris5k, to run a decent cam you a: need good flowing heads ( the TBI heads are crap ) and b: you need the proper valve springs on your heads as per cam recommendation. So go with the stock cam that's in there now or one that's stockish or a bit bigger so you don't have to change springs or worry about valve to piston clearances and torque converters and whatnot. Once you are ready for heads and a cam, that extreme energy 268H is a great choice, it's actually what I'm running in my car, it says biggest cam with stock converter but it's a lie, with the stock converter my car was a dog off the line, now I have a 2800 stall converter with a bullet proof 700R4 and it's deadly.
