1982 Z28 350 Eng. Swap
1982 Z28 350 Eng. Swap
I am not the owner of a 1982 Z28, the origional 305 was thrown away and a 350 put in its place. After careful inspection of the motor I have come to realize that the motor is actually a truck motor. Serial numbers match it to a 1983 5.7L built in Flint with a base power of 165hp for a c-10-3500. Block was made on May 25th. I have hooker headers, edelbrock intake manifold/600cfm carb, accel HEI super coil and various other adds. The motor it self doesnt seem to have much power at all... should i throw that block away and put an actual motor built for a car in there or any advice is appreciated. Here is a link to the car.

i would guess the block is similar or the same, just get vortec or aftermarket heads and a good cam and i think you'd be good. normally truck engines are built for low end torque sacrificing mid to high end hp.
Block is ok, cam and heads are the difference. Gather info on the heads and decide what you want to do (keep or replace) install the cam of choice and as to pistons, rings, bearings and etc. 350 chevy is a 350 chevy.

With the modifications you made (headers, intake, carb) the engine should perform quite well. Regardless of what it cam from, as stated by another 350 is a 350 is a 350. The HEADS & CAM are the BIG BIG differences.
I put a truck 350 (1974 -4-Bolt) into my son's '82 and even with the original TRUCK heads (very lightly ported and HEAVILLY polished) and a relatively mild CompCam (256) it is a real powerhouse!
IMPO - You should double-check everything else... Compression, Timing, Fuel Mixture, etc. Although a "Truck 350's Heads" won't scare anybody with an LT1 or LS1 motor but you should be happier with that motor. Maybe a cam upgrade(about $200) would bring her to life a little better.
