Changing a 305 CFi to a 350 CFI??

hello all,

I have purchased a T/A which im importing into NZ.The car has a 305 CFI engine and i have a crate 350 chev 4 bolt main sitting at my mechanics ready to go in.My question is will everything swap over from the old engine to the new one and what bits will have to be replaced so i get the benefit of the larger engine. If things like the ecu prom, injectors etc do need to be replaced can someone tell me where to find them please.Thanks.

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

Whether things will transfer over from your 305 to the crate 350 really depends upon what the crate 350 is. Most likely, if it is a GM crate engine, it all will.

Corvettes got the crossfire in the 350 version. I am not totally familiar with crossfire, but I believe it was a speed density system, meaning it is very sensitive to things like displacement and flow changes. So, purely speculating, I would say you need the 350 size injectors and 350 tuned PROM. Finding a salvaged Vette system would probably be the easiest way to get them (I know of no aftermarket for crossfire, except a manifold).

Someone will probably pipe in and say to convert it over to carb while putting in the 350. I would have to admit that makes a lot of sense to me.

Hi Thanks,

Yes the engine is a GM crate 350.

I want to stay with the factory orginal cfi system even though i see alot of people dont like them.

The car hasnt left the states yet so if possible i want to get the parts shipped to were the car is.

A complete list of parts needed would be great so when the car arrives the new engine can go in with no hassles.

Thanks

keep the CFI! These are so underestimated and because of this they are usually a pretty cheap find. I have a SBC 400 that I'm putting the CFI on. The CFI is not speed density, at least not on my '82 TA. Don't know about the '84 Vettes. The biggest problem with the stock CFI system is the intake. You can get them ported, and have the ERG channel removed and have them port matched but even then the gains are minimal. Bigger 454 injectors are often used, and you will want to go with an '85 vette fuel pump. You might also consider getting the throttle bodies bored out. This is a big improvement on airflow. As for programming the ECM, there is a thread on this board about EBL (Embedded lockers). You will need a different ECM and 7747's are often used. If you go EBL there is a list of ECM's you can use. There is more than you would think out there for tuning and modifying CFI systems. The best place is The CrossFire Injection Forum
You will find more info on the CFI there than you ever will here, no offense to anyone here or this site, it just seems most people here would rather say go to a carb setup. Search the CFI vault and I'm sure you'll find all the info you need, if not just ask someone!

If it isn't speed density, it has to have a mass air flow sensor. AFAIK, crossfire doesn't have any mass air flow sensor. But, I'm open to learnin'.

You're right, my mistake...the CFI cars do have a VSS, but from my understanding the main thing it controls is TCC lockup.

Thanks for the reply.

I tried the cfi site but i can see no where to register.Probably me.

Yes i want to keep the CFI.I didnt think an extra 700cc would need a bigger fuel pump.

I just want a confirmed list of what i need to changed. So far its injectors, fuel pump and prom or a complete computer.

So where do i get it all from???

thanks
