Door #1: Check out the 305 thread on the FAQ forum. The mods there will get 300 HP (gross flywheel - not the same rating that puts yours at 145 hp) out of a 305. It can be done in an emissions-legal manner if you like.
Door #2: Put the carbureted 350 in your car with whatever equipment/carb it has on it now. It really depends on the particular 350 you have whether or not that will work well. You can figure on needing a good share of the 305 mods behind Door #1 in order to get to 300 HP, though. Especially exhaust and air cleaner. But a 300 HP 350 is a lot more mild-mannered than a 300 HP 305 for "normal" driving.
Door #3: Put the 350 under your 305 equipment. That's basically what I did. It really depends on the particular 350 you have whether or not that will work well. So, provide some more specifics about the 350 you're considering, and we can add to the above. Since you're starting with an '83 305, the 350 route will most likely be more productive.

305 or 350 doesn't matter, as far as the cam goes. You just need to make sure it's the right type, and if this is an original '83 305, it's the less expensive flat tappet hydraulic type. How big of one you can run depends upon what's been done to the heads and how much torque converter stall you have. A Comp Cams XE256 is a good choice for a decent upgrade, but probably won't get you over the 300 HP mark. What do you have for exhaust, stock? You really need headers and a complete high-flow system on-back. Stock 305 heads are okay, but with a little bit of work are great. Stock valve springs are horrible, figure on new valve springs and retainers to go with whatever cam you end up getting.

Diverter valve - www.partsamerica.com , or most any parts store. The parts store may have to order it, but it's available.
