New 400sbc w/ edelbrock combo in 85 bird, hood wont close

I've recently had a 400 sbc with a Edelbrock combo and 4 barrel carb. dropped in my '85 firebird. The hood won't close with the airfilter on. What do I need to get to fix this problem? An airbox? Or will I have to switch to a custom hood? Please le me know any possible solutions to this problem?

You need a drop base air cleaner, check summit, jegs, etc. I also run a 400 SBC in my 86 T/A.

Yep!! I also have a 400 sbc in my 89 and I have a aircleaner with a drop base that just barely lets me close my hood.

A little off subject but I am in the middle of the same swap. What kind of starter do yall use, I heard that I need a mini-starter, is that right?

I used a set of shorty headers with a GM starter on my engine and had zero problems.

as far as the starter, my mechanic just changed the head on the GM starter; although he had to machine a hole to get it to mount properly

Would love to hear how you guys like the 400 sbc in your third gen...Was thinking about this for my 89 Rs...were there any major problems??? I have done the 305 to 350 swap, but man another 50 cubes would be awesome...Are you happy with results??? Are there any pitfalls, or suprises with this swap??

Got no complaints here. Mine had plenty of power and ran really strong, but I spun a bearing in it. I am going to pull mine and put in a 355 that I have. I will then make a 406 or 408 out of the 400 as funds allow. With it being a small block there is nothing different on the outside (i.e. engine mounts, etc.) from any other one, everything swaps right out.
