Exactly what damage was done when the rod went?

You don't bore a 305 to a 350, in case that's what you were thinking.

Without a doubt the LS1 would be the better performer, while remaining emissions-legal (assuming that's an issue where you are in CA) and being just about as easy on gas.

well i dont know what damage was done i had to drive it home about an hour on the freeway with the rod spinning so i dont know what it was hitting but my main question would be then how much money about would i be spending to put an ls1 in because i am assuming that i would have to replace the transmission too.

Replacing a short block is going to be a quarter the cost of a swap to a used LS1 if you do all the work yourself. A tenth if your having it done. I've always thought the TPI motor was the best looking set-up GM ever produced.

Anybody completed an LS1 swap for under $3500? Excluding to those that landed on an engine for free.

If it ran for more than a few milliseconds, then you don't have a broken rod.
