Finally finished the 305 to 400 swap
It's been almost three months and I finally got my car back. A 1984 black and gold base T/A with the induction hood and no options except for air and better suspension. It is cold and snowy in Ohio and I did not have a chance to really see how it runs, but I will let everyone know when the weather is at least dry. Here are the specs:
400 2 bolt
601P pistons (est. 9.2 to 9.5 compression)
Chevy 991 heads pocket ported with 202/160 valves
comp cam 12-262-4 cam
performer intake
hooker 2055's with hooker 3 inch cat back
hypertech thermomaster chip
I have retained all of the emissions and the engine looks "stock". I always wanted a 400 third gen after reading an article in Hot Rod where Herb Adams basically bolted a 400 block in place of an LG4 and ran 5.7 to 60 and 14.1 in the quarter with the log manifolds. I hope mine will run in the 13's.
One question for everyone, how can I make the transmission shift out higher than 4500 to 5000rpm. The detent cable is adjusted properly but the car wants to shift like it did with the 305. The car seems to pull to 6000 when I manually hold it in first. Any advice is appreciated.

Good feeling, huh?
For the tranny questions; first, it isn't a "detent" cable. It's a throttle valve cable, and that is an important distinction. It has to be properly adjusted (sounds like it is), or you'll burn out your tranny. As for the shift point, manually hold it to the shift point, or if you really want/need it to shift at the right spot automaticaly, change out the govenor springs/weights. I've been running mine as stock with no issues, when I "need" to, I shift manually.
