L98 crate motor

Was there an L98 crate motor on the market in the past years? within the last 7 maybe? i'm looking at a convertible and their claiming it has a L98 crate motor.

is there a way for me to tell if it actually a L98? and markings on the actual motor?

thanks.

Well, I do know that it's on the rear of the block, should say "5.7". As far as specific numbers saying it's an L98, I don't know. Another thing that you can do if it does say "5.7" and you want to know if it is in fact an L98 or just a 350 block, remove the driver side valve cover and look for the last 3 numbers of the head. It should either read 083 (fbody L98 iron heads) or 113 (vette L98 aluminum heads).

Good luck.

i dont think i can fit my head behind the guys motor, lol. I'll try to see if hes got any of the paperwork for the motor swap.

where on the block does it say 5.7? i might be able to get my cell phone back there to take a pic. i'll try it on my L98 Z before i go look at the car tomorrow.

does that mean they sold L98 crate motors back in the day like they sell the LS1's and such?

thanks

You must know what car im talking about, hes not far from you. or me for that matter. have you seen the car? what kind of numbers would that motor produce? my Z has the 245/345 which isnt much compaired to my SS. but a vert with those numbers would be like a wet noodle without proper support underneath.

yeah they made one years back. They quit making it and replaced it with the ZZ4, which is why they share so many characteristics. I bet GM didnt see the need for two very similar crate engines so made one 'universal' package.

alot of guys just throw the ZZ4 bottom end longblock and add TPI...it basically is a vette motor with a slightly bigger cam. solid 300-320 crank hp, not a bad foundation
