NoObie Here help please

well hello everyone i am happy to join your gang. lol
well as you can see already i try to be funny anyway.
i bought a camaro from my girlfriends fathers neighbor
he claimed he dropped a 4bbl 350 4 bolt main. with a turbo 350 trans in the 87 berlinetta.
now. i did the oilpan gasket and to my surprise there were only 2 bolts on the main bearing caps.
then i decided to check the stamped letters behind the alternator on the block. and all the letters came out to the engine being from the 70's
then i decided to check for the casting number behind the engine where the back of the engine mates with the bell housing of the trans. and to my surprise
the casting said "GM 5.0 L"
is it safe to say that its a 305??
the guy tricked the camaro out. its got full hotchkis suspension.
springs. traling arms etc.
got a b&m slap shifter.
and i just installed a flowmaster exhaust on it.
what im asking is .
how can i be 110% sure of what engine and trans i have in my car . so i can finally know what im driving
the engine in it now is carbureted. 4 bbl. rochester carb. has all factory egr piping on the stock exhaust manifolds. the air pump belt was cut off. as well as the a/c belt.
help me out
please.
thanks

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

Enough of your brand of humor.

jk

Did you get the block casting # when you had your face down there? That's the real way to tell what you've got. 2-bolt mains don't mean anything. I've heard stories about that "5.0" casting not necessarily meaning a 305.

well thats the thing! i checked ALLL around that area and all it said was "GM 5.0 L"
nothing else was casted on there.
thats the wierd thing. and it was on the driver side in the back of the engine . thats the reason why i beleive its a 305.
when did car manufacturers start specifying displacement with liters. instead of cubic inches of displacement.???

Look harder. Get a wire brush or something. Peak behind the bellhousing flange and look for 5.0LG or 5.7LG then on the opposite flange there will be some numbers. Bring us the numbers and we will bring you peace of mind.

p.s. Welcome to the boards.

opposite flange meaning... opositr side of the engine like on the passenger side??
or are all these casting numbers on the driver side rear of the engine?
thanks again.
