This is actually like the third northstar topic in 2 weeks. Try a search you may be surprised. I have seen one, but it was slow. They were not ultimately happy.

Unfortunately the northstar motors are brually expensive to modify. I think the pistons are stupidly expensive (no idea why).
Aurora V-8? The indy 4.0L? That'd be pretty cool, but I think it'd only work if you severly lightened the car, such that a small cube high revving high HP motor would work well. I don't think this has ever been done.

Anyway... lots of these cars are actually quite light, unless you are talking about a loaded GTA or something similar. My Z28 is around 3100-3200lbs, and that seems about right for the earlier cars from what I've heard.
That Olds 4.0 could be a really slick swap, but you'd have to gear it properly to make up for the lesser torque compared to a 305 or 350, but the RPMs a motor like that would make power at would make it worthwhile. Change to a set of 4.11 gears and a trans with a loose-ish converter and you should be just fine.

Hi all,
I not really intersted in updating my 82 to an Northstar or Indy motor. I just just trying to spark an conversation. One of the best thing about GM cars are that they are upgradeable. My 82 Firebird sports350 TPI motor, 4L60e trans, and full susupension upgrades. I have everthing this is imagaable for suspension upgrades etc. She is equip with an full 3 inch SLP exhust system. Car really performs better now then when she was new 25 years ago. The only thing my Bird does't have is rear disk brakes, but some day she will get those too.
The Northstar engine is now made for rear wheel drive. So I wonder if anyone wants to be the genny pig.
