What engine is it?
I have a 1987 Camaro. I believe originally it came with a 305 fuil injected( I know this). The motor was swapped before I got the car, It is now carburated and I believe it is a 350. How can I find out exactlly which moter and trans are in the car? It is an automatic trans.I would appreciate any help or advice you could give me.
Thanks
Ron

Look at the engine casting stamp. Towards the back of the engine near the bellhousing, drivers side I think you'll see a stamp, it should say 5.0L or 5.7L.
Or you might be able to get the casting number, then you can check it on mortec.com.
There is a site around that shows a bunch of different pictures of tranny pans, and tells which is which based on the shape. But here's an easy way to tell:
4 gears? (with overdrive?) 700R4
3 gears? TH350
That covers pretty much 90% of what it could be. There's a VERY small chance i'm wrong on that.

Re: What engine is it?
In the center console compartment there is a SPID label (Service Parts IDentification). Every option on the car will appear on that label and if you use the search function on this site I think there is a rpo decoder that will tell you what each is.
Also there is a general information page that you can refer to that will tell you alot about thirdgens.
A GM parts department can decode the casting number in the charts in their catalog for your engine.

This is a great site with great people! Where should I look for the casting #? The SPID label is different since I have put on a used console lid. Thanks again Ron

Re: What engine is it?
If you just want to check if the engine is a 350: Next time you jack up the car or have it serviced, you can look at the bottom of the engine on the driver's side, "350" should be stamped near the front freeze plug. Also, if the tranny pan looks like this: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku its's a th350. If its more square shaped with no notch: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku its a 700r4.
