383
ok my original 305 4bbl is dieing on me and i want to replace it with a bigger engine and right now its between going with a bbc 427 or a sbc longblock 383
how well does a big block even fit into an fbody and i would keep it carburated which i know most of u will tell me to upgrade to inject and do an ls1 but i want it carbed
and my other issue is that im a little confused about the 383 ive heard that its a different bore size than the 350 and from other places that the difference is the rotating assembly
let me get ur imput i really want to make this decision and not make a bad one

Re: 383
I can only assume that you would put a big block chevy in there for the romance of it. That's why I put Olds and Buick engines in mine, but it's not practical.
If you want 427 cubic inches then you can get that from PAW. They sell a 427 small block chevy in short block or long block form...
You can probably guess that since your big block chevy would be wider it will hit stuff like the A/C box and the exhaust will be tight but anything can be made to fit if you're determined. I think there is a sticky relating to this...
As far as I know, a 383 is a 350 that's been overbored .060 inches and uses the same stroke as a 400 small block. Sometimes guys will use a 400 crank with the external balance and sometimes they use a custom crank with the internal balance as they are becoming cheaper nowadays.

Re: 383
383 is a 350, .030 bored out, and stock sized 5.7 rods with a 3.75 stroke vs the stock 3.45 stroke... AKA its a 350 with a 400 crank as KrisW said. u could ground down the journals of a 400 crank but u can buy cranks that are designed for 350s which are stronger than the 400's from eagle, PAW, scat, etc. the big block should fit with no prob our cars have lots of room, some frame work etc might be needed for clearance, also ur gona have fun trying to figure out the exhaust on that with the BB. i would go with the 383 its cheaper and u could retain alot of the stock stuff not to meantion a 383's capability of 500+hp and torque so it can stand with the BB's. most ppl put BB's in so they can say i have a BB lol and thats fine. 383 is lighter and will give u better gas mileage...since gas is almost 3$ a gallon

Re: 383
good lord guys, both of you got it wrong..
350= 4.000" bore and 3.48" stroke
383= 4.030" (hence .030" bored over), and a 3.75" stroke(400 crank w/ 350 mains)
there are MANY places that sell 383 rotating assemblies.. for a budjet place, go to enginekits.com.. they have a really basic kit that costs about $500..
i would not go .060" over unless you absolutely have to.. there are also .040" over kits as well.. a .060" over "383" will actually be a 388.. the 0.040" is a 385
if you want more places, google search 383 stroker kit.. or something like that..

Re: 383
isnt that wat i said? lol
"383 is a 350, .030 bored out, and stock sized 5.7 rods with a 3.75 stroke vs the stock 3.45 stroke" ... oh oops 3.48 stock stroke. and i was correct about the crank too lol unless ur not talkin about me...
boring .060 over is extreme and shouldnt be done on engines bc its is said to be the maximum tolerance but most find that the piston walls are too thin and fail.

C'mon guys, give me a break! What's .030 between friends???
Anyway, I think he understands now thanks to everyone else. I'm going back to my Buick 350!
