Re: Pontiac V8 Swaps
I got a 88 TA that originally had a lb9 305 with a 5-speed trans. Then this car was later upgraded to a L98 350. This 350 then blows up, and now a friend has a LS1 motor that he is selling, and I am considering putting it in this 88TA. Will the 5-speed manual tranmission handle this added horsepower? I heard that GM only put 305's in thier manual tranmission cars because they could'nt handle
the power and torque from a L98 350. If so then An LS1 obviously has much more power than a L98. Any thoughts on this swap?
Also anyone know if their is a conversion made for this swap, and how much does it cost?

I am moving this out of the "Pontiac V8 Swap" sticky because it doesn't have anything to do with a Pontiac V8 swap.
The LB9 is not a "Pontiac" engine. The LS1 is not a "Pontiac" engine. The sticky is intended for giving members information about putting the pre-3rd gen Pontiac-designed engines into a 3rd gen, whether "Pontiac" or "Chevrolet" 3rd gen (although there probably aren't many Camaro owners who would consider putting a traditional Pontiac engine into their car). It's not about "Pontiac Firebird" engine swaps, because there isn't anything unique about 3rd gen 'Birds vs. Camaros - the engines, engine bays, operating systems, drivetrains, etc., are identical between 3rd gen 'Birds & Camaros (with a couple of air cleaner exceptions).
Now, for information about LS1 swaps, there is a sticky about that. Read that first.
There are various stories about why the factory never put a T5 behind a 350: 1) The tranny isn't strong enough; 2) the combination wouldn't pass emissions; 3) the combination made f-bodies faster than Vettes of the day. I tend to believe #'s 1 & 3.
