I have a 89 RS that had been sitting with a weak 305 TBI for about 8 years. Swapped in a 355 with a Comp. 262h cam and used the original throttle body. I also used Hooker shorty headers. The motor was running great with a Weiand aluminum intake and Holley 670 street avenger carb. After swapping in the motor it would crank by priming it but would die as soon as that gas ran out. I went to the local upullit yard and got a TBI off of a police car . It cranked up and ran for several minutes. The next time I cranked it up it runs about 5 seconds then dies, and it will do this over and over. I am on my way to get the chip from that same police car and the knock sensor, after finding this site. I just got activated this morning and very happy. I just finished my 69 442 and I did all the work on my 468 big block Olds with the help of realoldspower.com so I know how valuable a web site like this is. Thanks guys. I plan on using my RS for my dailiy driver and sometimes drive the 442. But still want the Camaro to get attention to.

 

You need to slap on a carburetor for the time being, as even with that other chip installed, although you may get it to "idle", it still won't idle well, let alone run right altogether though. It needs to be tuned properly. Slap on the carb until you learn how to tune TBI. Check out the TBI section of this website, search for the member's Dimented, and RBob (it'll be easy, they're moderators), they'll definitely be able to help you get to where you want to go....

slap the carb on it and have fun, a friend of mine did a 400 in a 305 car used a 454 throttle body and had a chip burnt for it, it ran great. sounds like fule pump

 

Dropped the tank, fuel pump had a hole in the rubber hose. Replaced pump and hose, re-installed the tank car ran and idled fine.

 

Im building a 383 to put in my original 305 tbi car right now. If your planing on keeping the tbi the guys at turbo city really helped me.

Well guys I am still running open headers for now, so to drive the car I had to wait for it to get dark. I was pleasantly surprised. Car didn't idle for crap but stomped it at a 20 mile an hour roll and burnt rubber til I let off. My son was with me and started begging me for the car. The only third gens I have to compare it with is a 82 Z28 I bought new and this 89 when I bought it about 6 years ago, unbeliveable it ran strongggg. Remember I have a 69 442 with a 455 punched out to 468 with Wiseco pistons Engle 22-25-10 cam and torker intake with Dougs Headers about 400 hp. So I am not easily impressed. I had so much problems with the Camaro I was planning to sell it. No way now. My new daily driver. Just have that stumble and idle to fix maybe someone on here can direct me in the right direction.
