is my camshaft too big?
i believe my camshaft is too big but i want to see what you guys think....the motor is a 350 bored over to a 360.....federal mogul powerforged pistons 9:8:1 compression pistons...the block has been zero decked the heads are 64 cc sportsmen 2's with 2.05 valves ..no porting...eagle rods...high rise bowtie intake and 750 holley ( thinking i might need somethign closer to 800)...for the camshaft its a crower solid roller .630/286....i think for the most part everythign matches pretty well and the motor could handle the high lift but i believe my low compression does not match well witht the duration..i am guessing its 10:1..i dont know how much zero decking picks up...and i believe this cam needs somethign in the 11:5:1 range....right now the car weighs roughly 3350 with me in the car best run of 12.33 @ 112 with a measly 1.80 60 ft...although i do have a stock gear and this motor does need a bigger gear to turn some higher rpm's..anywho tell me what you think.....my plan to fix that is to upgrade to a set of 58cc dart iron eagle platinums...the lower cc should get me much closer to that 11:5 range..and a 4:10 gear...my reason for thinking this cam is to big is the fact that i went from a 355 with stock rods 9: 5 :1 compression..534 hydraulic cam...same heads intake and so on and since that motor i have only picked up 2 tenths....please please any and all info/advice is appreciated

Re: is my camshaft too big?
what is the duration @ .050"??? from what i got, it does look like a HUGE CAM.. i used to run a comp 306S solid flat, 260* @ .050, .592/.555 lift.. that was a bit large for my 385 at 10.1:1..
.630 and 286 doesnt make sense.. pretty high lift but MASSIVE duration.. you would need 12:1+ compression.. also, if you up the compression to 11.5:1, the iron will do you NO good.. it will detonate like runnin through a mine field.. you will absolutely need aluminum heads with a nice port/polish job for that.. what made you pick that cam?

Re: is my camshaft too big?
well the cam was free lol and its a 300$ dollar camshaft so i went with it....it was originally in a 383 12:5:1 compression running high 11's low tens in a 3600 pound car....with my compression i know i need something in the 250 260 of duration...motor is making good power...just at real high rpm which i really cant turn with my 3:42 gear...and with all that high duration and lack of gear its realy not making much torque...im getting 1.80 sixty foots ( 3800 stall) and cracking 113 mph.....but i am not sure what the duration is at .050......

i'm sure you meant high 10's to low 11's.. but wow.. free is a great price.. i agree on the lack of gear.. with the cam i'm runnin(the one i described), i have a 4.30 gear and go through the lights at 115, about 6400 rpm on a 26" tire.. that cam you have probably would like a 4.56 or 4.88 on a 28" tire..
