Building 454, Need Help.
Well i am going to rebuilt a 454, from a 1978 RV.
I don't know whether to go supercharger, or just N/A. Here are my 2 ideas, I'm lookin for at least 650HP.
B&M 174 Blower Square Port
ProComp Aluminum 320cc Aluminum Square Port
Crane 286/296 .534/.553 Hydraulic Flat Tappet
Weiand Tunnel Ram Dual Carb's
ProComp Aluminum 320cc Aluminum Square Port
Crane 310 .600/.620 Cam
I'm new to big blocks so any help would be appreciated.

Both of those cams are tiny. You're going to want something with around .650 lift.
If this is for street use, build a single carb NA engine. My engine makes around 650 uncorrected HP to the wheels. It's far from streetable.

are those procomp heads good?
what intake/carb do you recommend with those heads and .650 lift cam?
it will be mated to a th400.

As Stephen stated both those cams are small if you're going to use rectangular port heads(especially with a tunnel ram). When I had the 454 rebuilt in my '70 Monte Carlo I staid with the oval port LS5 heads just had new valve guides/3 angle/polished.She was .030 over,10.5 comp,Weiand dual plane(it was an older one even in '85),Holley 750 vacuum secondary jetted for the cam and head work(same shop did both)street car so I kept the cam small,Comp cams 290M,and I wish I had went a little more even with the TH400(still 400-425hp on a dyno back then). But this was in a much heavier car.

Re: Building 454, Need Help.
Probably better than my Canfield 310 heads.
Dual plain intake if used on the street, single plain if track only. An 850 DP carb to feed it.
My old 469 (454 + .070) had a Victor Jr and 850 carb with the biggest Extreme Energy hydraulic cam available. Running on pump gas, it had no problems pushing my car deep into the 11's.
What you want really depends on what you want to do with it. A race engine doesn't belong in a street car. Wanting 650 HP doesn't say much. Most people are more than happy with 350-400 hp on the street. Spending a lot of money to build an engine that makes huge amounts of power at high rpm is a waste if it's street driven at low rpms. Building a high HP engine also isn't just about an engine. The entire driveline needs to be be changed or beefed up to use all that power. It needs to be a package deal.
Where my car is now was progressive changes over 8 years.

Re: Building 454, Need Help.
it will be rough but i ran low 12s in my 86 with drag radials and seems it wasnt fast enough.
this wont be a daily driver pretty much track time.
would it be ok to run the stock block for now until it goes there are 78,000km on it original it was in an RV.
