400 sb question
400 sb question
hey everyone, i'm new to the forum's and really new to the "muscle" car scene. i built a tuner a few years back and now want something new. i plan on dropping a 400 SB in an 83 camaro. i had a few questions about the 400.
It is a SB 400 4 bolt main. standard bore. the motor has a 350 horse RV cam in it. the guy told me that it has 350 sb heads steam drilled. also the tranny i will be going with is a 350 turbo with a shift kit?
ok so my first question is what does everyone think of that setup so far???
i want to really build a quick/cheap car i can take to the stip. i want to be in the 11 second range, and dosn't have to be all motor but would prefer it to be.
so my next question is what would everyone change/add to get the 400 to run 11's all day at the track??

Re: 400 sb question
There's no useful information to comment on the setup. "SB 350 heads" and "350 horse RV" cam are meaningless.

Re: 400 sb question
I got a friend's 90 firebird with a 400 sbc into the 12s on the motor with ported L98 heads and a big cam. It was the dreaded Performer RPM grind that sofakingdom hates... with a 750 Carter AFB and 1 3/4 SLP headers (expensive) at first until we monkeyed with the TBI in a few big ways.
Getting into the 11s from there I would guess would mean deep gears (4.56? probably) and bigger cam with better heads. I'm not sure vortecs could get you there. I think they probably run out of potential on a 400 before you hit the 11s.

Re: 400 sb question
I run vortecs on my car. I've ran a 12.8 @ 108 so far. I've yet to get a good launch down as my 60' is still 1.887. I know if I ran roller rockers and an electric water pump and 3.73s in the rear I could go lower 12s. On nitrous I would imagine you could go 11's no problem.
The build I went off of made 430hp and 525ftlbs of torque. With a light enough car you could easily go 11's.
A buddy of mine said one of his friends ran 11.7 on a vortec headed 400. He's a real trustworthy guy, but in this game, I don't believe it till I see it. But it's definitely possible.
