86tpi Engine and Harness in 89tpi car !please help!

ok i've made acouple post before about this issue but now i finally have an idea of what im up against..

im trying to swap an 86TPI Engine into an 89TPI car

the issue im having is that my 89 car has no engine wiring harness so im forced to use my 86's full engine harness..

but when i went to hook it up to the main C207 connector thats under the passenger side dash i noticed that there is a connector(C221) on the 86 side of the harness that doesnt have a connector to plug into on the 89(under dash) side and this C221 i believe powers the INJECTORS and FUEL PUMP

from what i have read.. the C221 connector was removed in 89 and i believe the connections where added to the C207 connector somehow...

the other wires on the C207 all match up except for the VATS with my 86 harness does not have and VSS wire which the 89 harness does not have

my question is how can i splice the wires to make the C221 connector work? or how do i go about providing power to this main connections for the inj. and pump.

also i have an 86 2.8 FI car that i was orginally going to swap my 86TPI into but i wrecked it and thats why i bought the 89 roller..

i dont know hardly anyting about wiring but one other thing which may sound stupid was would i be able to trace the C221 connector to the fuse box and see where it connects and reconnect it to my 89s fuse box?

any info is greatly appeciated... if anyone needs pictures of these connectors to better understand what exaclty im taking about please reply with any info you may need to help me solve my problem

thanks,
adam

Re: 86tpi Engine and Harness in 89tpi car !please help!

I do similar stuff sometimes and this is what I do. I'm not saying it's your only option, it's just what I do...

I have a Chilton's Total Car Care Manual. Not the Haynes. The Haynes has a few wires that are missing on their diagrams. The Chilton's is very comprehensive.

I make a photocopy of each year's wiring diagram and then I start to line wires up, one at a time until they match what they are supposed to do. For your project, I would use the 86 engine harness as the master plan. You must wire everything to the 86 harness for the ENGINE to work. Next, you will be tracking down the VATS wiring so that you can actually START your car. You will also need to search these forums until you get all of the necessary info about by-passing your VATS system.

The manual is about 30 bucks. It is the best investment you can make for what you are about to undertake.

Good luck!

That information is in a tech article linked from the thirdgen.org homepage.

Re: 86tpi Engine and Harness in 89tpi car !please help!

I'm in a similar boat, I'm planning to swap in a TPI'd 305 (block# 14010203, head# 14014416, #'s off intake 5052, 14081005) in place of a 89' TBI 305.

Got the "new" engine's computer, wiring harness, and so on, and plan to drop in the engine (after rebuilding it and building it up a bit) and re-use the 700-R4 that my car came with. Will there be any problem with using the "old" transmission with the "new" ECU?

I put up the casting #'s because as far as I can tell, the TPI engine is an LB9, 86 or 87. The person I got it from said it's most likely and 86.

Sounds like an '85, actually.

Don't rebuild the 305. Doesn't make performance $'s sense. Rebuild the heads, okay, put in a different cam, okay. Just don't spend any money on the shortblock.

No problem with the transmission and ECU, as far as I know. Assuming the 4th gear pressure switch stayed the same, which I believe it did.

Thanks! I'm not building up the 305 for performance, just getting it ready to run reliably for a good long time, perhaps get some more torque out of it while I'm there.
