SWAPPED 305 FOR OLDER 350, EMISSIONS QUESTION
SWAPPED 305 FOR OLDER 350, EMISSIONS QUESTION
I have an '84 Camaro. I replaced the stock 305 with a remanufactured 350. The 350 came from the 70's so the emmissions does not match up. It has a 600 Holley and the carb doesn't have any of the connections. I've been experiencing a really high idle, usually over 2000 RPM. I assumed that this is due to emmissions and vacuum tubes not being hooked up correctly. The vents have been blowing fuel or exhaust into the cabin and I thought this could be from an emmissions leak somewhere. I want to remove the emmissions all together, but I wasn't sure if this would cause other problems with the computer. If I cap off the two tubes coming off of the exhaust manifolds will I have to do anything with the computer, or will it cause any other problems?
I really appreciate any insight any can give me.

The holley would not be factory, so that won't have all of the hookups that were factory. Basically, stock to stock, it would all transfer, the only changes were generally in the manifolds. There weren't any smog ports on the heads, there were some changes in the intakes, but not to the point of not working with other engines. Vacuum leaks will give you a high idle, and improperly hooked up emissions hoses will also give you exhaust leaks if the thermactor and such are not hooked up properly.

The absolute best, least expensive, best street/performance/economy choice would be to put the 305 operating system (carb, distributor, sensors, and perhaps intake manifold) on the 350.
The only reason that wouldn't be the case is if you physically abused the stock '84 stuff.
The exceptions: The stock exhaust, and the stock air cleaner. Unless your 305 is the L69 option, which isn't likely.
Removing "emissions" is a red herring. Don't fall for it.
