355 build help

im seeking advice on my first sbc build on my own.
im starting with a 010 4-bolt main block that has been .030 over and new cam bearing installed. i have a GM forged steel crank, some sort of stock GM rods w/ arp bolts and forged flat top pistons.

first id like to say that id like to keep this a pump gas motor. that is my only stipulation. 93 octane. but id like to build it as hot as i can within a reasonable budget.

what do you suggest for heads? i was leaning towards some sort of aluminum heads.
best bang for the buck?

what do you suggest for a cam? i was thinking a mean solid roller.

now about the rotating assembally... should i go with a different setup than i have? maybe better rods?

how limited am i seeing how id like to keep the crank.

thanks...
-Jeff

Re: 355 build help

Theres alot of good aluminum heads out there but they are all more expensive then iron heads. i've heard some good things about Jegs brand aluminum heads, as they have good flow numbers, big valves, and are reasonably priced. i plan on putting a set on my 383 stroker in the future. you want everything to work together. what are your plans for the engine? drag only, street strip, road course? you want it to perform for your intended use, but not be overkill. i would suggest a modest hydraulic roller cam, no frequent valve adjustment needed and still makes very good power and reduces friction. something like a comp cams xtreme energy hyd roller 282 would work well.

What induction were you planning on using?

Hard to beat this in the bang-for-buck category http://www.sdparts.com/catalog/engin...rHeadKits.aspx

i want the hottest 93 octane 355 can be.
it would be a drag engine, with limited street use. id like to spray it also.

Can't argue with the vortecs for bang for the buck. Edelbrock E-tec 170's are also a good value if your dead set on aluminum. Hydraulic roller is also a freat choice but can depend on what you mean buy "budget".

A Super Victor is a serious manifold for a serious engine. No guts below 3500 RPMs, you'd better build a pretty stout rotating assembly and valvetrain for 8000 RPMs.

Let's talk budget - you have $10k to spend on this or not?

Not sure on your budget but if you're looking for a good bang for your buck check into the 062 Vortec heads they can be had from several places here's something to consider also:

Right, that's one of the choices from the page I linked. I didn't know what induction he planned, so I just linked them all.

Re: 355 build help

well i aquired this short block from a family friend. and no, im not looking to dump 10k into it. i need a valvetrain and heads to make it complete, but i was hoping to go 10.90s on nuts, and then be able to take a 100-150hp shot.
it will probably be going into a fox chassis.
