89 firebird v6 to v8 swap 1980 vette 350 didnt work so we went to a 74 z28 camaro engine we have all motor mounts and everything needed but the tranny bellhousing (T.C.I. streetfighter th350) is sitting against firewall and the dist. is against too. this is keeping me from bolting mounts to chassis and the drive shaft and torque arm will not fit (both barely an inch too short)... aside from sledging the firewall back where needed anyone know how to clear this problem?

You've got the motor mounts installed wrong on the crossmember.

Yeah. Double check. If both your transmission and distributor are hitting the entire drive line is shifted too far back.Originally Posted by Apeiron

if you pulled the mounts out of a v8 thirdgen, and have the engine mounts from a v8 car, and they are bolted to the k-member correctly, what you are saying is impossible. The engine is waaaay too far back, how many bolts are you using on the k-member side of the mounts? it should only be 3, one hole hangs off the front of the k member and is not used. If you moved the mount to use all 4, this is where you problem lies. You are not trying to use and of the mounts form the doner 74 are you?
i am using the clamshells from the 74 yes but from what i have read and from my previouse experiance swapping my camaro all clamshells are the same. these mounts utilize the 3 bolt pattern on the cross member as usual.
but my concern is the engine and transmission arent back far enough the torque arm isnt reaching to the tranny (i have a 4 hole tail shaft to fit a third gen t-arm) also the drive shaft isnt working i am using almost all of the same parts i used to mount a 350 streetfighter into my camaro and this time its just not working noone who has looked at it can seem to figure it out either... im going to work on taking pics to show whats going on today if i can

If you're using a short shaft TH350, it won't work with the thirdgen torque arm, and you'll have to get a custom driveshaft made.
Plus the mounts that go on the crossmember have to go in the front holes, not the rear holes on the crossmember, that should get the distributor off of the firewall.

i can deal with getting a new drive shaft made... and no im not using a short tail shaft im using a long one but i also undertsnad the whole use the front bolt holes... I AM and the dist still sits against the firewall

You'd better post the pictures. There was only one "frame" (for lack of a better term) made for the 82-92 Camaro/Firebird. ALL of these cars use the same motor mounts for the sbc, whether or not it started life as a V6 car or not...
If your distributor is hitting, the engine is too far back, and that means that you are in the wrong place...

The '82 frame didn't have the rear crossmember holes or nuts for the long transmission/short crossmember mounting.
ok i will re re re check the mount placing and the mounts themselves. also custom driveshaft is at this point understood... but for my torque arm problem i would rather not modify or by an after market arm to fit.. so i found this kit through jegs will this help my cause in any way? http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...10002_24766_-1
and yes the bird had a th200r4 in it (senior tech called it a turbo 250 never heard of but whatever)

Okay, let's go back to the top (sorry I didn't do that in my first response).
You have to move the mounts that bolt to the frame crossmember from the back of the crossmember to the front. The V6 engine uses the rear position, the V8 the front. If you try to bolt a V8 to the mounts where they were when the V6 engine was in, the engine will be too far back and the distributor and bellhousing will hit the firewall.
That is clearly covered in the V6 to V8 swap sticky in the top section of this forum.
I believe the B&M kit uses the short torque arm, but it won't do anything about the improper location of the crossmember. You need one from an early '82-'83 car with TH200C or 4-speed. Guess who just happens to have one of those available?

If the bird was an '89 with a 2.8 V6 it would have had the 700R4 in it.

Understood, but he's using a TH350 now.
By the way, Apeiron identified the problem in the very first response.

im taking pictures right now i know i have them in the right place im sure of it but just to show give me about 20 mins from this post
these are all of it sitting in place as close to teh front mounting holes as possible its still off by 3mm and the dist and bellhousing are crammed against the firewall

Those look wrong to me...
You should have one lower corner hanging off the frame, I think...

They don't look forward enough to me...
You should only be able to get the two top bolts and one bottom - not both...

there is only one hole on the bottem in the center i know it looks liek more but its not.. i pulled em off the cross member of a 305 tbi no engine attached to em but i know they were from a v8 camaro cuz i pulled em myself
im going to go back tommorow and look for more but i "thought" these were it

Doesn't go in the center hole on the bottom, goes in the back hole on the mount itself
Yeah, it looks like they aren't forward enough.
